DUNDEE REP

By Jean Genet

DIRECTOR
Eve Jamieson

SOUNDTRACK INFO
Eve Jamieson was looking for a Hitchcockian/ psychological thriller feel to the production and soundworld. My soundtrack is a cinematic sound design inspired by the horror film genre, exploring an unsettling world full of suspense and intrigue: we had telephones ringing at exaggerated sound levels, doors banging suddenly, the sound of footsteps of unseen characters, voices of disembodied entities, double bass drones ... all the classics. There is a deep emotional element to the soundtrack too, underscoring the complex sub-narratives of the characters and their sense of hopelessness — illustrated in the soundtrack by my piano transcription of the Francis Poulenc song, C'est ainsi que tu es

“Slabs of sound slice the air to punctuate each scene of Martin Crimp’s stark and stabbing translation of Genet’s 1947 masterpiece in Jamieson’s production. David Paul Jones’ score adds an air of menace to the sado-masochistic role-play it helps illustrate.”
